MUPY in partnership with Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia held the First Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia – Mahidol University Joint Scientific Conference. This conference is a project to boost collaboration between the two institutions which has signed an official memorandum of understanding in an institutional level back in November 2009. The conference was held during 12-13 October 2010 with more than 150 participants including 34 MUPY graduate students and staff along with UKM staff and other Malaysian schools. In addition, MUPY staff had also visited UKM campus in Kuala Lumpur on 11 October 2010. During this official visit, MUPY staff had interacted closely with UKM staff with productive discussion and exchange of ideas on management of pharmacy education and research at a faculty level and explore potential on research collaboration between the two institutions.
The 1st UKM-MU Joint Scientific Conference was held at PURI PUJANGGA, an official conference venue of UKM Main Campus located in Bangi, Selangor. There were over 56 presentations covering various fields of pharmaceutical research including 11 lectures/oral presentations from MUPY in both Plenary and Parallel Sessions. For MUPY students, there were 4 oral presentations and 9 poster presentations. The meeting was chaired by Prof. Narong Sarisuta (MUPY) and Assoc. Prof. Mohd Cairul Iqbal Mohd Amin (UKM). Professor Dr. A Rahman A. Jamal, Director, UKM Medical Molecular Biology Institute (UMBI), the official representative of UKM’s Chancellor, presided during the opening ceremony while Dean Chuthamanee Suthisisang (MUPY) and Dean Ibrahim Jantan (UKM) were the official witnesses of this ceremony.
At the end of the conference, the announcement was made that 3 of MUPY graduate students won the best presentation award in various areas as the followings.
MR. Jiraphong Sukrisiworapong won the best oral presentation in the area of Pharmaceutics.
MS. Napatsanan Klawikkan won the best poster presentation in the area of Pharmacology & Basic Sciences. MS. Nuttawan Klomthong won the best poster presentation in the area of pharmacy Practice.
In addition to scientific conference, a welcome dinner party where MUPY & UKM staff and students participated in cultural exchange activity. For MUPY, 4 graduate students performed classical Thai dances while Dr. Jaturong Pratuangdejkul and Assist. Prof. Usa Chaikledkaew sang a Thai famous duet song called “Num Na Kaw Sao Na Kler” which had received a standing ovation from the audience.
In the closing ceremony, Assoc. Prof. Sompop Prathanturarug served as a representative of MUPY and went on stage to announce that MUPY will be the host for the Second MU-UKM JSC which will be held in conjunction with the 7th PharmaIndochina in December of 2011.
