MUPY strengthened ties with Taiwan’s Ministry of Health and Welfare through traditional medicine collaboration

On Wednesday, August 13, 2025, from 02:00 PM to 04:30 PM, the Faculty of Pharmacy, Mahidol University (MUPY) hosted an official delegation from the Ministry of Health and Welfare of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and China Medical University. Held in Room 606, Rajaratana Building, the visit was officially received by the Faculty’s administrative team, led by Assoc. Prof. Surakit Nathisuwan, Dean of MUPY. The Taiwanese delegation, headed by Prof. Dr. SU Yi-Chang, Director of the National Research Institute of Chinese Medicine, Ministry of Health and Welfare, comprised 26 distinguished officials, researchers, experts, and doctoral students specializing in traditional medicine.

In this regard, MUPY was also honored by the presence of representatives from Thailand’s Agricultural Land Reform Office (ALRO), Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, led by Mr. Surachai Yutthachana, Deputy Secretary-General of the Agricultural Land Reform Office, who joined this trilateral meeting to share insights and perspectives from the agricultural policy sector.

This official visit of Taiwan delegation aimed to explore avenues for collaboration and knowledge exchange between Thailand and Taiwan in the areas of medicinal plant cultivation, policy development, and processing techniques. Discussions focused on Thailand’s strategies for developing medicinal plants, methods for processing medicinal materials, and the potential for cultivating and importing Chinese medicinal herbs suitable for Taiwan. The meeting also addressed collaboration for the herbal trade with Taiwan, and explored developing partnerships in agricultural herbal development within land reform areas. The goal is to elevate the quality of production and entrepreneurship for farmers in these areas. In addition, the meeting sought to identify opportunities for academic and research cooperation, as well as to strengthen bilateral engagement in the administration and advancement of traditional medicine.

This engagement was expected to generate long-term benefits by deepening mutual understanding and laying the groundwork for future joint initiatives. Through such cooperation, both parties aspired to advance research, innovation, and sustainable development in traditional medicine. The activity aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, by promoting growth in the medicinal plant sector, Goal 9: Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation, and Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals, by enhancing cross-border collaboration in health and research.
