Pharmacogenomics for Rational Drug Use in Thailand

On Tuesday, 15th December 2020, the Faculty of Pharmacy, Mahidol University (MUPY), in collaboration with the Health Systems Research Institute (HSRI) and Ministry of Public Health’s Department of Medical Sciences, Division of Genomic Medicine and Innovation Support (GeMIS) jointly organized the conference entitled ’Pharmacogenomics for Rational Drug Use in Thailand’ at The Sukosol Bangkok Hotel. The conferences’ opening session included a welcoming speech which was firstly expressed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chuthamanee Suthisisang, Mahidol University’s Vice President for Policy and Planning, and the background information of the research project was then reported by HSRI’s representatives. After that, the Chairman of Mahidol University Council, namely Clinical Prof. Emeritus Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn, M.D., was presided over the opening ceremony. Regarding this, MUPY’s executives led by Assoc. Prof. Surakit Nathisuwan, the Dean, along with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Usa Chaikledkaew, Deputy Dean for International and Public Relations, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Doungdaw Chantasart, Assistant Dean for Research and Innovation, also attended the conference. The conference’s morning session included the talks conducted by Dr. Nopporn Chuenklin, M.D., HSRI Director, and Dr. Surakmeth Mahasirimongkhon, M.D., GeMIS Director, respectively, followed by the keynote speaker, namely Prof. Dr. Prasit Watanapa, M.D., the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital. There was also a press conference session for all journalists who joined the event. After that, the research project’s leader, namely Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pramote Tragulpiankit, together with his project member, namely Asst. Prof. Supatat Chumnumwat, presented the major findings of their research project. The afternoon activity of the conference was separated into two sessions including 1) the meeting for the research project attended by the principal investigators of five minor projects, researchers, invited experts, and stakeholders, and 2) the practical workshop for pharmacists carried out by Asst. Prof. Supatat Chumnumwat and Dr. Supharat Suvichapanich. The objectives of the conference included 1) to present the preliminary findings of each project to all involved parties and summarize the research projects in order to determine the utilization and application of the research results, 2) to disseminate the relevant knowledge concerning pharmacogenomics for rational drug use to pharmacists, physicians, and healthcare practitioners who joined the conference, 3) to receive additional advice from the experts and stakeholders in order to further conduct the research, and 4) to publicize the research findings to all mass media.
