Opening ceremony of the 2023 Training Program in Technology of Medicine and Public Health for Health Personnel from the Lao People’s Democratic Republic

On February 6, 2023, from 09.00 a.m. to 12.00 p.m., MUPY’s executives led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Usa Chaikledkaew, the Deputy Dean for International and Public Relations, together with Dr. Krisada Sakchaisri, and Dr. Amporn Songkasiri, Head of the International Relations Division, attended an official opening ceremony of the ’2023 Training Program in Technology of Medicine and Public Health for Health Personnel from the Lao People’s Democratic Republic’ initiated by HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. Having been held at Mahidol University’s Faculty of Public Health’s meeting room, its opening session’s activities included 1) a welcoming speech delivered by the program’s host and cohosts, 2) a video presentation illustrating a royal biography and dedicated works of HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, and 3) an overview and introduction of the training program. This year, 37 Laotian healthcare professionals such as physicians, surgeon, pharmacists, nurses, dentists, medical technologists, and physical therapists participated in the 25th batch of the professional training program which was divided into nine programs. They came from several regions of the Lao’s People Democratic Republic. This year, the training program was returned to an on-site format at six institutes under Mahidol University which served as the training sites and included the Faculty of Pharmacy, after the previous two years that had been organized via an online platform. Regarding this, three Laotian pharmacists who participated in the 25th Pharmacy Program included 1) Ms. Sangvan INSYXIENGMAI, Savannakhet District, 2) Ms. Souksavath PHAVANNASOUK, Champasak District, and 3) Ms. Somsamone XAYYACHAN, Luang Prabang District.

After the morning’s opening session, the Faculty of Pharmacy also further arranged the orientation meeting for three pharmacy trainees at Room 309, Rajaratana Building. This meeting was attended by Assoc. Prof. Surakit Nathisuwan, the Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, along with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Usa Chaikledkaew, the Deputy Dean for International and Public Relations, Dr. Krisada Sakchaisri, and Dr. Amporn Songkasiri The meeting aimed to provide them an overview of the Pharmacy Program and an advisory session in order to discuss and help the trainees develop their research proposal which to be presented at the end of the whole program. The training program was initiated by HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn and has continuously been hosted on an annual basis under a collaboration of the Royal Office, MOFA’s Thailand International Cooperation Agency (TICA), and Mahidol University’s faculties. The objectives were 1) to increase the knowledge and skills in health promotion and prevention, 2) to strengthen and develop public health, and 3) to exchange knowledge and experiences in the development of medical technology and public health.

In addition, this training program corresponded to the Faculty’s mission in terms of serving as the portal for professional services that encompasses drugs, herbal medicine, cosmetics and dietary supplement to support the sustainable development of the nation. It also responded to SDGs goals including Goal 4: Quality Education to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all, Goal 10: Reduce inequality within and among countries, and Goal 17: Partnership for the Goals to strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development.
