Dexamethasone เป็นยาต้านการอักเสบกลุ่มสเตียรอยด์ มีข้อมูลรายงานว่าการบริหารยา dexamethasone sodium phosphate ทางหลอดเลือดดำ (intravenous; IV) อย่างรวดเร็วเพิ่มความเสี่ยงต่อการระคายเคืองฝีเย็บ (perineal irritation) ซึ่งอยู่ระหว่างอวัยวะเพศกับทวารหนัก เป็นผลให้เกิดอาการคันแสบร้อนบริเวณฝีเย็บได้ [1] การศึกษาอุบัติการณ์การเกิด perineal irritation พบว่าการให้ dexamethasone sodium phosphate 0.15 mg/kg/dose ทำให้เกิด perineal irritation ในเพศชายและหญิงได้มากถึง 56% และ 30% ตามลำดับ [2] ดังนั้นแนะนำให้ทำการบริหารยา dexamethasone sodium phosphate ทางหลอดเลือดดำ โดยเจือจางด้วย normal saline solution 0.9% หรือ dextose 5% in water (D5W) [3] ปริมาณ 50 ml และให้ยานาน 5-10 นาที เพื่อลดโอกาสเกิดผลข้างเคียงดังกล่าว [4-6]
