Effects of low water permeability methacrylate ester copolymer (Eudragit? RS100) and compression force on the release of propranolol hydrochloride (PPNL) matrix tablets were investigated. The PPNL matrix tablets were prepared using Eudragit? RS100 as both matrix forming agent and drug release retarding agent. The drug and dibasic calcium phosphate mixtures were wet granulated with 5, 10, 15 and 20% of Eudragit? RS100 using fluidized bed granulator (Glatt GPCG1) and compressed to tablets at the compression forces of 90, 140 and 190 MPa. It was found that the granule size and flowability increased with the content of Eudragit? RS100 while the release rate decreased. The compression forces employed were substantially high in order to maintain the integrity of the tablets throughout the dissolution test; however, the drug release was not affected by the compression forces used. It could be believed that, the changes in porosity at high compression forces were very little.
