Effects of Polyhydroxy Compounds on the Formation of Microemulsions of Isopropyl Myristate, Water and Brij97

Prapaporn Boonme, Sarunyoo Songkro and Varaporn Buraphacheep Junyaprasert

The microemulsion systems consisted of isopropyl myristate (IPM) as an oil phase, water as an aqueous phase, Brij?97 (polyoxyethylene-10-oleyl ether) as a surfactant and a polyhydroxy compound as a cosurfactant were investigated. The cosurfactants used were propylene glycol, 1,3-butylene glycol and glycerin, all of which are polyhydroxy compounds widely used in the pharmaceutical industry. The existence of microemulsion regions was illustrated in ternary phase diagrams. The results suggested that not only the component ratios would influence the characteristics of obtained products, but type and concentration of the polyhydroxy compounds would also affect the shape and size of microemulsion regions.
