In Vitro Evaluation of a Natural, Edible Gum Isolated from Acacia sinuata as Mucoadhesive AgentP. Perumal* and Amal K. Banerjee
-
The aqueous extract prepared from gummy exudates, isolated from the stem barks of Acacia sinuata
was subjected for purification and isolation of the natural mucoadhesive agent. The purified mucoadhesive agent
was subjected for evaluation of the mucoadhesive property by various in vitro methods like thumb test, swelling
index, shear stress, falling sphere, Wilhelmy¡¦s and Robinson¡¦s methods. Predetermined concentrations of selected
mucoadhesive agent were used and the mucoadhesive potential was measured in terms of force required to detach
in all the studied methods except falling sphere method, in which the time period was measured. Material
obtained from the bark of the plant A. sinuata and synthetic substance sodium carboxymethyl cellulose were
subjected for study. The mucoadhesive agent obtained from A. sinuata was found to have good mucoadhesive
potential in the demonstrated in vitro models. ÆÉAll rights reserved.
