The seed powder of Mirabilis jalapa (four - o’ clock) is traditionally used for the treatment of microbial infection. Several reports also indicated that proteins isolated from the ripe seeds of Mirabilis species showed both antifungal and antibacterial activities. The aim of this study is to characterize the biochemical properties of crude proteins extracted from the mature seeds of Mirabilis jalapa. SDS- PAGE analysis showed three major bands of molecular weight of approximately 31, 24.5 and 13 kDa that were proved to be glycoproteins. The antibacterial activity of crude proteins was tested against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium and was only active against B. subtilis at protein concentration of 0.37 mg/disc. Interestingly, the proteins exhibited potent anticancer activity to permanent cell lines L929 (mouse fibroblasts). The cytotoxicity tested with mosquito larvae of Aedes aegypti and Artemia salina (brine shrimp) was also investigated
