On Tuesday, July 4, 2023, Assoc. Prof. Surakit Nathisuwan, the Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Mahidol University, had accepted an invitation and joined as a Plenary Speaker in the 2023 Pharmaceutical Education and Research Leadership Summit (PEaRLS) hosted by the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). The conference’s theme was “Transforming Pharmaceutical Education: Empowering Future Pharmacists Through Decisive Leadership, Innovative Teaching and Learning Strategies”. Having been held during July 4-5, 2023, at the Eastin Hotel Penang in Malaysia, the conference was also arranged in collaboration with partner universities from Malaysia, India, and Indonesia.
In light of this, Assoc. Prof. Surakit Nathisuwan, as a Plenary Speaker of the Day 1’s conference, delivered the academic lecture entitled “Evolution of BPharm to PharmD in Thailand” which discussed the development of Thailand's pharmacy education as well as shared Thailand's experiences in implementing the 6-year pharmacy education and curriculum as the first ASEAN nation, resulting in becoming a role model for other ASEAN and Asian countries to follow. His presentation also gained enormous attention and discussion from more than 200 attendees who came from various Asian countries. On its Day 2, he also took part as a Panelist in the conference's Forum 3 entitled “Is PharmD The Way Forward for Pharmacy Education in Southeast Asia?”.
Also, Assoc. Prof. Surakit Nathisuwan had an opportunity to establish and discuss education and research cooperation with the delegation of the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia which has been considered a renowned university ranked in the Top 100 in Pharmacy & Pharmacology field by QS Subject Ranking.
Moreover, the conference consisted of a series of academic lectures from invited speakers, oral presentations, and poster presentations from the participants. The conference also provided a Career Talk Session which comprised of relevant topics that helped the participants to better understand the gaps between themselves and the job, and equipped them with the necessary skills for the upcoming job interview and kickstarting a career as a pharmacist and in the pharmaceutical sectors. This conference served as a vital platform for the assimilation of pharmaceutical education and research leadership. It also brought together esteemed regional and international experts from various universities, representing a diverse range of perspectives and experiences in pharmacy profession.
Furthermore, his participation in this conference supported the Faculty’s Missions in terms of serving as the portal for professional services that encompasses drugs, herbal medicine, cosmetics, and dietary supplement to support the sustainable development of the nation, resulting in increasing international visibility of Mahidol University’s Faculty of Pharmacy. It also responded to SDG’s Goal 4: Reduce inequality within and among countries. Goal 10: reduce inequality within and among countries, and Goal 17: Partnership for the Goals to strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development.
