Acyclovir is a hydrophilic drug. It can not be permeated well through human skin. A suitable methodology is required for increasing percutaneous absorption of acyclovir to produce the therapeutic level. In this study, it was found that 50%v/v ethanol/ water could enhance the permeability of acyclovir through human epidermis. Enhancing effect of selected enhancers was also studied. It was found that 4%w/v l-menthol showed superior permeability enhancement over capsaicin, nonivamide and methyl salicylate. However, this concentration may cause skin irritation. Other enhancers had less enhancement effect on percutaneous absorption of acyclovir. © All rights reserved.
