Smectite เป็นสารดูดซับ (adsorbent) ที่มีคุณสมบัติในการเคลือบเยื่อบุกระเพาะอาหารและลำไส้ ช่วยดูดซับสารพิษ เชื้อโรค และน้ำส่วนเกินในทางเดินอาหาร มีข้อบ่งใช้หลักสำหรับอาการท้องเสียทั้งชนิดเฉียบพลัน และเรื้อรัง โดยปกติแนะนำรับประทานก่อนอาหารประมาณ 1 ชั่วโมง อย่างไรก็ตามมีคำแนะนำให้รับประทานหลังอาหารโดยเฉพาะในผู้ป่วยที่มีภาวะหลอดอาหารอักเสบหรือกรดไหลย้อน เพื่อให้ตัวยาเคลือบผนังหลอดอาหารและลดการระคายเคืองได้ดีขึ้น ทั้งนี้การรับประทานก่อนหรือหลังอาหารไม่ได้ส่งผลต่อประสิทธิภาพของยาอย่างมีนัยสำคัญ ผู้ป่วยสามารถปรับช่วงเวลาให้เหมาะสมกับความสะดวกหรืออาการเฉพาะของตนได้ โดยไม่กระทบต่อผลการรักษาในภาพรวม
