Efficiency of pharmacists working at the Outpatient Pharmacy Department of Rajavithi Hospital, Bangkok, Thailand was assessed by work sampling method. A data collection form was developed and tested for content validity by five specialists in hospital pharmacy and the interrater reliability was 0.9. For five consecutive workdays in November 2001, eight pharmacists’ activities were recorded by 8 trained observers at five-minute intervals. A total of 3,648 pharmacist observations were collected. The results showed that on average, each day, the pharmacists spent 54.74% of their working time on professional activities, 10.01% on clinical activities, 7.04% on technical activities and 28.01% on other activities. The efficiency index was equivalent to 0.80. Most of clinical activities involved attending the clinical training program, but only 0.03% in performing patient counseling. This research revealed that the efficiency index was high but not related to patient. More patient oriented activities should be set up in order to reduce the errors occurred in the working process.
