Is Metformin Helpful in Diabetes?

คำตอบ

Metformin is an antihyperglycemic agent in the biguanide class. It is also known as an "insulin sensitizer" that effectively reduces blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. Its mechanism of action is primarily interfering with hepatic gluconeogenesis and reducing glucose production by approximately 25-30% of the body’s total sugar synthesis. Metformin also decreases fasting plasma glucose, postprandial glucose, and enhances peripheral insulin sensitivity.

The American Diabetes Association’s Standards of Care in Diabetes and Cochrane reviews emphasize that metformin is a highly effective oral medication for type 2 diabetes. It reduces blood sugar levels with a low risk of hypoglycemia and may result in slight weight loss or weight neutrality. Metformin also provides significant cardiovascular benefits, reducing the risk of stroke and myocardial infarction, especially in overweight patients. These findings highlight metformin as a preferred monotherapy option, offering benefits comparable to or greater than other antihyperglycemic agents.
