ยาต้านอักเสบที่ไม่ใช่สเตียรอยด์ชนิดใช้ภายนอก (topical NSAIDs) เป็นยาทางเลือกเพื่อบรรเทาอาการปวดในระบบกล้ามเนื้อและกระดูกแทน NSAIDs ชนิดรับประทาน (1) ในประเทศไทยมีตัวยาในกลุ่ม NSAIDs ในรูปแบบใช้ภายนอกหลาย ได้แก่ diclofenac, ibuprofen, indomethacin, ketoprofen, piroxicam และ nimesulide (1) ซึ่งเอกสารกำกับยาของ ibuprofen และ nimesulide ระบุว่าไม่ควรใช้ในเด็กอายุต่ำกว่า 12 ปี (2, 3) ส่วน ketoprofen ไม่แนะนำให้ใช้ในเด็กอายุต่ำกว่า 15 ปี (4) สำหรับ diclofenac และ piroxicam ยังไม่มีข้อมูลการศึกษาด้านความปลอดภัยและประสิทธิภาพในเด็กที่ชัดเจน อย่างไรก็ในทางปฏิบัติอาจสามารถใช้ยาเหล่านี้ในเด็กได้หากได้รับคำแนะนำจากแพทย์หรือเภสัชกร
